Paper 2 · Religious Practitioners

Give the Shona term for a spirit medium, the person through whom a mhondoro speaks to the community.

Model answer

svikiro

Also accepted: masvikiro, isangoma, homwe hwemhondoro

Explanation: A svikiro is possessed by a territorial spirit (mhondoro) and speaks in its voice, which is how the ancestors are understood to address the living. The mediums of Nehanda, Chaminuka, Kaguvi and Mkwati carried great authority, and it was that authority the guerrillas of the Second Chimurenga drew on.
