Paper 1 · the First Chimurenga: the Uprising in Mashonaland

A source on the uprising in Mashonaland records that Kaguvi was captured in 1897 and Nehanda in December of the same year, that both were charged with murder in March 1898 and that both were hanged on 27 April 1898. Kaguvi and Nehanda were...

Acommanders of the Ndebele regiments
Bchiefs who ruled the Mupfure valley
CNative Commissioners killed by an impi in 1896
Dspirit mediums who called people to war
Explanation: Nehanda and Kaguvi were mediums of senior ancestral spirits, and their word carried across chiefdoms that had no single ruler. That religious authority is what let them call the people out in 1896, and it is why the settlers hunted them down and hanged them rather than treating them as ordinary prisoners.
