The three phases through which a rite of passage moves are
Aconfession of a wrong, payment of a fine, then removal from the family.
Bprayer, sacrifice, then the naming of a new chief for the whole village.
Cseparation from the old status, instruction, then public reincorporation.
Dbirth, marriage, then death in the ordinary course of a person's lifetime.
Explanation: Every rite of passage separates the person from the status he is leaving, holds him in a period of seclusion or instruction, and then returns him publicly to the community with a new status. Initiation shows this most clearly: the initiate is withdrawn, taught by aunts or uncles, and brought out with new dress and a new standing.
