Explanation: Mombe youmai, the mother's beast, is due to the bride's mother in her own right, cannot be waived or replaced by the father, and its offspring belong to her. It is a public acknowledgement, in the most valuable currency the society had, that a mother's work of bearing and raising a daughter has a claim of its own.
