Explanation: A clan does not eat, kill or use the animal that is its totem, and it is said that a person who eats his own totem will lose his teeth or fall ill. The rule has the practical effect of conserving the animal, since each clan protects its own. Greeting, ceremonies and funerals are unaffected by totem membership.
