Paper 1 · Africa and Decolonisation

Name the 1888 concession by which Lobengula granted mining rights in his country to agents of Cecil Rhodes.

Model answer

Rudd Concession

Also accepted: Rudd, the Rudd Concession

Explanation: Charles Rudd, Rochfort Maguire and Francis Thompson obtained the document at Bulawayo in October 1888. Rhodes used it in London to argue that he already held rights in the country, and it became the basis for the Royal Charter granted to the British South Africa Company the following year.
