Paper 2 · November 2023 · Industrial chemistry

Sulphuric acid is manufactured by the Contact process. Sulphur dioxide gas escapes as one pollutant from the process, and CaCO3 is used to minimise it. Name the second pollutant produced, an acidic mist that escapes when sulphur dioxide is further oxidised in the converter.

Model answer

sulphur trioxide

Also accepted: SO3, sulfur trioxide

Explanation

In the converter, SO2 is oxidised further to SO3. Some of this escapes as an acidic mist rather than being fully absorbed, so sulphur trioxide (SO3) is the second pollutant of the process.
