How ZIMSEC Grading Works: O Level and A Level Explained

ZIMSEC reports results subject by subject on a letter scale, not as a single overall mark. O Level and A Level use different scales, and neither one runs down to G, a common mix-up with the Cambridge GCE A to G scale used elsewhere. Here is what the ZIMSEC letters mean.

O Level grades

O Level subjects are graded A, B, C, D, E, or U for ungraded (below E standard).

A grade of C or better is commonly referred to as a credit pass. The benchmark most schools and employers cite for a full O Level certificate is 5 subjects at C or better, including English Language.

Grade boundaries are set per subject and per sitting, so the safest way to confirm exactly where a grade falls is your official result slip or ZIMSEC directly.

A Level grades

A Level subjects are graded A to E as pass grades, each carrying UCAS-style points (A = 5 down to E = 1), with O for a subsidiary pass and F/U for a fail.

A grade of O means the candidate passed at O Level standard rather than at the full Advanced Level standard. A grade of F or U means the candidate did not attain a pass at Advanced Level; per ZIMSEC's own Guidelines for Results, an F grade is not shown on the certificate.

Why the combination matters

Most next steps, whether that is A Level, a college programme, or a job, look at a specific combination of subjects and grades rather than a total subject count. English Language and Mathematics passes are commonly required alongside subject-specific requirements.

Always check the exact requirements with the school, college, or employer you are applying to, since they can differ even for similar-sounding programmes.

Exam rules, dates, and fees change between sittings. Always confirm the latest information on the official ZIMSEC website before you rely on it.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a pass in ZIMSEC O Level?

A grade of C or better is generally treated as a credit pass. The commonly cited benchmark for a full certificate is 5 subjects at C or better including English Language, but what you actually need depends on what the result is for, so confirm with the specific institution or employer.

Do I need to pass every subject I sit?

No. ZIMSEC reports each subject separately, and most next steps only require passes in a particular combination, most commonly including English Language and Mathematics.

Does ZIMSEC O Level go down to a G grade?

No. ZIMSEC O Level grades run A, B, C, D, E, with U for ungraded. An A to G scale is used by Cambridge GCE O Level, not ZIMSEC.
